How to run the Bistri WebRTC Demo with Chrome 21

P2P Video Calls in the browser, with no plugin nor flash at all ! A real standard solution, IETF, W3C working hard hand-in-hand.

Google implementation in Chrome can be tested by anyone on Bistri. This is how to make it work :

Requirements :

1 - If you dont have it, download Google Chrome

if you have Chrome, check your version by typing “chrome://chrome/” in the address bar, it must be > 21.0.1180.89.

2 - Modify the Chrome Settings :

Now you are ready to test WebRTC

4 - Make a video call with anybody on Bistri, who would like to test WebRTC with you guys.

He/she will have to setup is computer the same way as you just did.

If you want to try the demo on your own, just open an incognito window :
Use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows, Linux and Chrome OS) and ⌘-Shift-N (Mac)

and copy/paste your Bistri Link to be reached in this incognito window. Your Bistri Link is displayed when your click on “Invite” on the right side of the header on Bistri.

5 - When you receive an incoming call, Chrome let you choose the Webcam and the micro you like to use on the top-right of the screen.

Then click on “Allow”

As the video call starts, don’t forget to click on “Autorize” on the top bar.

If everything is fine on your computer, you will see this desktop notification :

After a few seconds, tada !

You will see the WebRTC logo on the right.

If you click on “Video effects”, you will enjoy several HTML5 Live Video Effets :)

You can also enjoy the quality of the HTML5 Full Screen Mode, and make some snapshots :

Click on “Take snapshot” :

Ready? Make your best smile, 3-2-1

Tada !

If you like your snapshot, click on “Save” :

Now you can share your snapshot on Facebook, Twitter, or just send the link via email / SMS…

New release : Chat with your friends on Facebook, Yahoo, and Jabber. Chat History

Dear Bisters,

A few weeks ago, we launched the Bistri / Google Gateway, the first of a long list of course !

We are really proud to launch today the following gateways :

  • Bistri / Facebook
  • Bistri / Yahoo Messenger
  • Bistri / XMPP (Jabber)

No need to import your friends to video call, or simply chat with them, just activate the services you need, where your friends are.

Facebook has the largest number of users, but some people still resist to Facebook, keep using other services like Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo messenger, or even the open protocol XMPP (Jabber).

The Internet has been invented to be able to communicate, even after a global disaster like a world war or a nuclear explosion… the specifications were clear, written by smart & philanthropic persons. Their documents used to become standards after a simple process, adopted by the ones who wanted to participate in building this new world. At this moment, no one could imagine create a service using non-standard protocols, nor put the user in a walled garden…

The users were free to jump from one site to another, just following links…

All these so successful “Big Gorillas” are offering amazing services, but they also try to keep the user stuck. As an example, impossible for a Facebook User to chat with a friend who prefer keep using Yahoo Messenger.

At Bistri, we believe in video chat interoperability !

Now, let’s try the new Facebook gateway :

1 - Click on “Settings”, on the top right. There is a new tab called “IM accounts”

2 - You are already done !

Your friends from Facebook are now visible in your friend list, with a specific icon

3 - Chat with them, as you talk to any Bistri user.

If you start a video call with a friend who is using Facebook Chat, he will receive your Bistri Link in his favorite instant messenger : one click from him, and you will enjoy the Bistri Video Chat, full of funny video effects :)

On the Bistri Mobile Web App, you will also chat with your Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and Jabber friends.

Conversation history

A simple click in the settings, and all your conversations are saved :

“Enable messages archiving”

Of course, if you don’t want to save the conversations you have with a particular contact, just unselect “allow archiving for this contact” on the chat window.

Simple for the user, but a true challenge to make it. More about it on the Bistri Engineering Blog.

As I am writing these lines, late in the night, this terrible news…

RIP, Steve

Gateway to Heaven

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” - Steve Jobs
